The great variety of Franconian wines is determined by the variety of geological formations in this region. Every wine is strongly affected by the soil in which the vines are growing. The different types of soil determine the composition of minerals the vines can absorb.
The Franconian landscape shows new red sandstone, shell limestone, Keuper and loess. It is said, that real connoisseurs can taste the different soils the vines grow on.
